Am I still walking?

Been a long, long time since I updated this blog, raising the valid question am I still walking?

Yes. Yes, I am. Here are my excuses.

Finishing my PhD  [Teaching Jazz: a study of beliefs and pedagogy using Legitimation Code Theory (Richardson, 2019), a compelling read, do check it out] took a LOT of time and some things had to give. One of them, sadly, was very long walks. No matter, I’ll get stuck back into it as soon as I’ve finished that, I told myself. “I’m gonna walk the shit out of that bush, just as soon as I’ve finished”.

OK, I’ve got a summer jazz camp to run and a business I’ve been neglecting, so as soon as that’s sorted. (Want to learn how to play jazz?)

OK, as soon as I’ve finished these thesis corrections. Then, Ima hit the trails again.

Ok, so as soon as this pandemic blows over and I’ve saved the business (music lessons were unfairly and unscientifically demonized by politicians and the NSW Department of Education as dangerous and super-spreading. In fact there was no evidence of the kind, anywhere).

Lockdown was over, all looking good, when the phone range: “landlord says we’ve got 4 weeks to vacate the premises, they’re decommissioning (aka condemning) the building”. So, another 6 months to sort that out, more Covid lockdowns… It all made doing long walks unfeasible.

Now, however, I’m back and walking again. I’m 15+kg heavier, and out of shape, but keen. Of course I did keep walking, just not so long or so far. If I get a chance, I will post some trip reports from the handful of more interesting adventures, for there have been a couple. I have also been using Facebook a lot more for trip reports and photos. For the time being, though, I’m back to training, have entered a 12-hour race as a motivational target, and am venturing out on the trails and roads again. And it feels good.
